Long Term Disability
LTD is a benefit for the employee who will be unable to return to work even after their sick pay and/or STD benefits have been exhausted. LTD requires a longer waiting period than STD, during which the employee must be totally disabled and unable to work to be eligible for benefit payments. LTD benefits can be either a flat dollar amount or a percentage of the employee’s monthly salary. The waiting (or elimination) period is tailored to begin once the STD benefit period or company paid sick leave ends, and in most cases continues until the employee reaches age 65.
